Food Trailer vs Buffet Catering: Which is Right for Your Adelaide Event?
Booking mobile catering in Adelaide usually comes down to one choice — do you want a food trailer rolled into the venue, or a buffet set up and served on-site? Both are great. They just suit different events. Here's how we think about it at Ninin's — Adelaide's only Indonesian food trailer, and a full on-site buffet team.
The Quick Comparison
| What to compare | Food Trailer | Buffet Catering |
|---|---|---|
| Vibe | Street-food energy, queue-up service, part of the entertainment | Relaxed, generous, walk-up-when-ready feast |
| Best guest count | 60–500+ — handles big crowds easily | 25–200 — best for seated or grazing events |
| Setup | Trailer parks on-site; needs vehicle access + space | Tables and bain-maries set up indoors or under cover |
| Service style | Fresh-cooked to order at the window | Self-serve buffet line with chafing dishes |
| Best venues | Outdoor weddings, festivals, clubs, breweries, public events | Function rooms, offices, halls, homes, marquees |
| Weather plan | Trailer handles rain & wind; needs queue cover | Indoor or covered marquee required |
| Price guide | Per-event quote — strong value for 80+ guests | From $26pp — easy to budget per head |
The Food Trailer
Ninin's is the only Indonesian food trailer in Adelaide. We roll up, set up, and cook fresh at the window — satay over flame, nasi goreng in the wok, spring rolls straight from the fryer. Guests line up, the smell hits, and the trailer itself becomes part of the event.
- Best for: outdoor weddings, festivals, public events, breweries & wineries, clubs, milestone parties, council functions.
- What you need: reasonable vehicle access and roughly a 6m x 3m setup area. Power is helpful but not always required.
- Why people pick it: fresh-cooked-to-order food, scales to big crowds, looks great in photos, doubles as entertainment.

The On-Site Buffet
Same Javanese recipes, set up indoors as a full buffet line. Slow-cooked rendang, fresh satay, fragrant rice, vegetables and house sambal — kept hot in chafing dishes, served all at once so your guests aren't waiting around. Perfect when the venue's already sorted and you just need the food done properly.
- Best for: indoor weddings, corporate lunches, training days, school & club events, milestone birthdays, fundraisers.
- What you need: a table run for the buffet line and reasonable kitchen or prep access.
- Why people pick it: per-head pricing from $26pp, generous portions, easy logistics, works in any function space.
How to Choose
Pick the trailer if…
- Your event is outdoors or has vehicle access.
- You have 80+ guests, or expect grazing through the night.
- You want the food to feel like part of the experience.
- You're running a festival, public event, club night or wedding reception.
Pick the buffet if…
- Your venue is indoors or doesn't fit a trailer.
- You want per-head pricing that's easy to budget.
- You need everyone fed inside a tight service window.
- It's a corporate lunch, training day, school function or seated wedding.
Still not sure? Tell us the venue, guest count and timing — we'll recommend the right setup. Plenty of Adelaide events end up booking a trailer for one part of the day and the buffet for another.
